Mike Fuller and the Joy and Hard Work of SongWriting

Phil, Neel, and Mike

Mike Fuller’s rock and roll roots run deep. The son of a church organist and a cover band singer/rock and roll enthusiast, it seemed only natural Fuller would follow the musical path laid by his parents and find himself writing a collection of uptempo, foot-stomping tunes.

Mike spent much of the pandemic like many of us– floating in existential dread, contemplating life and his future. Fuller busted through his own self-constructed roadblocks, releasing his debut, The Human Condition-EP, in September 2020, but more remained from life to contemplate.

And so we have Fuller’s follow-up project, The Missed Connection-EP. After a few months of recording in Brooklyn in early 2021, Fuller was joined by Jordan Rose on drums (Theo Katzman, Caleb Hawley) and Andy Hess on bass (The Black Crowes, Gov’t Mule) to complete his newest project.

If The Human Condition-EP debut was a mellow, sensory declaration, The Missed Connection-EP is an emotional breakout. With Rose and Hess, Fuller’s brought the attitude and melody of blues rock to the dance floor. This trio of songs shares the explosiveness of sound akin to Gary Clark Jr., John Mayer Trio, and Theo Katzman, but they’re all Mike Fuller.

And so we asked Mike lots of questions. Like…

  • what are the seeds of his inspiration
  • the way to exercise your songwriting muscle
  • what are the benefits of collaboration
  • how to make the business side work for you
  • what was the origin of his latest single Ms. Wrong
